Mr. Blake was one of the health teachers at a medium size countryside community college in the Western part of the U.S. For "Alcohol Insight Month" he made up his mind that he would give his attention to the following three topics for a class assignment: alcoholism symptoms alcoholism statistics, and alcoholics info.

After Mr. Blake finalized the topics that would be dispensed to his pupils, he made a decision that he would provide them with their assignment the following Monday morning.

When “assignment day” eventually came, Mr. Blake met with his class, disseminated some relevant facts and information, and then informed the members of his class about the topics he finally selected.

He then gave the members of his class a concise articulation about the importance of learning more about alcohol dependent individuals and how they perform their activities on a daily basis.

Mr. Blake notified the members of his class that they could isolate on one of the three topics or talk about all three topics and how they are interlinked. For all intents and purposes this would be not unlike a basic summary but done in a more thorough manner.

Another option that he presented to his students was the following: take a topic such as alcohol addiction signs and symptoms, explore things in a more far-reaching manner, and then discuss two or three symptoms and signs. Mr. Blake then pointed out the fact that the same logic applies to the other two topics, namely, alcoholics info and alcoholism statistics.

The end result of their exploration would be a nine thousand word composition and then a twenty-five minute oral presentation that would be given in front of the class.

As appreciation for their outstanding academic success, those with the top four overall grades on the term paper and on the presentation will be encouraged to present the end product their research investigation at the tri-state alcoholism and alcohol abuse convention during the last nine days of May.

After the pupils received the assignment for their project, several of them raised their hands and asked for an illustration of a sub-topic that they could highlight for their project.

In reaction, Mr. Blake determined that he would briefly talk about three or four alcoholism signs and symptoms that the students could elaborate on.

As a case in point, Mr. Blake mentioned the following alcohol dependency symptoms and signs: an obsession with drinking, loss of control, cloudy thinking, and boasting and a "big shot" complex.

Mr. Blake’s wish was that by requiring all of his pupils to delve into one or more of the three alcoholism topics, all the students would have greater comprehension of a complex yet key topic such as alcohol addiction.

Mr. Blake also thought that by elevating the comprehension of his students about the damaging effects of alcoholism and the dreary daily lives experienced by alcohol addicted people, his students might think more sensibly before they get caught up in irresponsible and abusive drinking behavior.

    The notion that business schools should not do research and instead offer practical help to businesses is problematic on a number of fronts. First, the strong evidence is that there is a positive correlation between the quality of research conducted in B-schools and the quality of their teaching. For instance, one can compare B-school rankings with research assessment exercise results. Second, if a B-school decides not to do research they will be unlikely to attract high quality staff (or students). Third, business scholars cannot simply take business knowledge and inject it into practice, because of the reflexive nature of social knowledge (i.e. the output of business research partly constitutes the phenomenon of study – organisational life – which is quite unlike knowledge of the natural world). Fourth, business is in many ways a competitive game between players so there is an ethical issue for B-schools who want to help companies (which companies should be helped and which should not be helped and how should this choice be made?). And if business schools are expected to operate as consultancy firms, should we not also expect, say, engineering departments in universities to do likewise. By the way, if one accepted Kevin Denny’s point that business schools, “like type-writing and hair-dressing schools”, should be private then one should also move all vocational schools out of the university, including engineering, medicine, law, etc.Fifth, because business is so important, pervasive and implicated in the distribution of wealth and power, it warrants independent study (not just research on behalf of some vested interests). So B-school researchers are typically students *of* business rather than *for* business. And because social life is more complex than physical phenomena (only God knows why he gave the easy problems to the physicists) this research is hard to do, and requires time, talent and resources.
