Hemorrhoids is a common condition that occurs to more than half of the people around the world. Often times it goes away on its own over a period of time. However, there are times when the condition becomes severe that treatments are needed. The most effective way to treat this is to change one's diet and one's bowel habits. Most of these cases do not require surgery, other than those who experience severe symptoms such as extreme pain and the size becomes very large. There are non-surgical procedures that can be done to treat hemorrhoids. They are referred to as fixative procedures. Its goal is to reduce the blood flow to hemorrhoids, causing it to shrink and eventually go away. Examples of these are rubber band litigation and coagulation therapy. The surgery that is usually done when the condition is severe is called hemorrhoidectomy.

More often than not, doctors do the fixative procedures first before opting for surgery. There are advantages and disadvantages that the patient might want to consider before choosing any of these procedures. Doing the surgery offers better results when it comes to long-term period. However, it is more expensive and more painful. It also requires more recovery time and has a greater risk for any complications. Patients who are older than 70 years old and who are not in a good health condition are advised to have the non-surgical one. It should also be noted that there are times that the most effective way of treating this problem is having a combination of treatments.
